Because of Them…I Can

It’s the most Wonderful time of the year. Yes, I know it is not Christmas time. It is, however, the time we honor and celebrate African American History in the United States.   I would like to honor some of the pioneers, champions, innovators, and game-changers. Because of them, I can be proud and free to be all of me. As a lover of quotes, I want to share my favorite motivational thoughts from a few leaders.

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the ultimate orator and advocate for civil rights. This message reminds me daily to keep moving forward even when I can’t predict what is ahead. Because of Dr. King, I can continue following my dreams without hesitation.

I had to make my own living and my own opportunity! But I made it! Dont sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them!” – Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the first female self-made millionaire in America. As an entrepreneur, this motivates me to constantly create my own opportunities.  Because of Madam C.J. Walker, I can continue on my path of entrepreneurship knowing that the next opportunity is waiting for me to make it happen.

langston Hughes, i too

I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.

I thought it important to include this entire poem by Langston Hughes. He was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright and columnist. Because of Langston Hughes, I can sit proudly at the table, make a difference and use my voice for change.{Happy Birthday Mr. Hughes, February 1}

I pray this motivated you to walk farther in your faith, create your own opportunities, and take your rightful place at the table. Who inspires your life? Let me know in the comments below. I would love to hear from you. Be sure to follow us on all Social Media @LifeIsAPartyLLC.

Until next time…
